The new article entitled “Speciation of organic aerosols in the Saharan Air Layer and in the free troposphere westerlies” has been published in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Discussions.
Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Discussions (ACPD) has published in the last volume a study performed by Scientists of the Izaña Atmospheric Research Centre (IARC) entitled “Speciation of organic aerosols in the Saharan Air Layer and in the free troposphere westerlies”. The paper is opened for public review and discussion until the 24th April 2017. Atmospheric aerosols - liquid and solid particles blowing in the air - influence on climate, human health, continental and marine ecosystems, and visibility. The magnitude of More...

“Compatibility of different measurement techniques of global solar radiation and application for long-term observations at Izaña Observatory” paper published in AMT
A 1-year intercomparison of classical and modern radiation and sunshine duration instruments has been performed at Izaña Atmospheric Observatory (IZO) located in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) starting on July 17, 2014. We compare global solar radiation (GSR) records measured with a CM-21 pyranometer Kipp & Zonen, taken in the framework of the Baseline Surface Radiation Network, with those measured with a Multifilter Rotating Shadowband Radiometer (MFRSR), and a bimetallic pyranometer (PYR), and GSR estimated from sunshine duration More...

New CIAI's seminar. Electrical discharges in planetary upper atmospheres: chemical and thermal effects
On 9 March 2017 at 13:00, Dr Francisco C. Parra Rojas (ULL-AEMET) imparted the seminar entitled "Electrical discharges in planetary upper atmospheres: chemical and thermal effects" at the Izaña Atmospheric Research Center's Offices in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Francisco has recently joined the "Stratospheric ozone and UV radiation" group of the IARC, and has kindly acepted to give a seminar about the research work he carried out during his PhD he defended in 2015 at the University of Granada. New CIAI's seminar: Stability of the RBCC-E Triad and Implementation of UV measurements on EUBREWNET
On 23 February 2017 at 13:00, Dr Sergio F. León Luis (AEMET) imparted the seminar entitled "Stability of the RBCC-E Triad and Implementation of UV measurements on EUBREWNET" at the Izaña Atmospheric Research Center's Offices in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Sergio talked about two on-going studies performed by the RBCC-E Group about  which two posters were presented in the last QOS (Quadrennial Ozone Symposium), in 2016. “A new zenith-looking narrow-band radiometer-based system (ZEN) for dust aerosol optical depth monitoring” paper published in AMT.
There are currently extensive networks of ground-based sun-photometers all over the world dedicated to aerosols monitoring. These networks are integrated by very precise instruments, close to the 0.02 aerosol optical depth (AOD) accuracy in the visible spectral range suggested as a goal by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). However, there is a lack of stations in desert regions in the Northern Hemisphere, which are the most important source of mineral dust, mainly due to the high cost of these sophisticated sun-photometers, the More...

New CIAI's seminar: On the study of aerosol content for astronomical site characterization
On 19 January 2017 at 13:00, Dr. Antonia M. Varela (IAC) imparted the seminar entitled "On the study of aerosol content for astronomical site characterization" at the Izaña Atmospheric Research Center's Offices in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Antonia is a researcher/engineer of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, where she works in two research lines: characterization of the atmosphere over the Canarian astronomical observatories, and starbursts.Click here to go to the section Seminars of the CIAI's website, where there is More...
