July 12 has been designated by the United Nations (UN) as the International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms (SDS), with the aim of raising global awareness about the growing health and environmental challenges posed by SDS.

In this context, Dr. Emilio Cuevas, former Director of the Izaña Atmospheric Research Center (IARC), received a recognition award for his contributions to the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System (SDS-WAS) Barcelona Dust Regional Center.

During the event, the extensive curriculum vitae of Dr. Cuevas was presented by Slobodan Nickovic, Vice-Chair of the WMO SDS-WAS NAMEE (Northern Africa, Middle East and Europe) node and representative of the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia. The presentation emphasized Dr. Cuevas’s significant contributions to mineral dust research, his extensive scientific career in atmospheric composition monitoring, and his leadership in these areas.
