Aerosols Program
AEROSOLS
Atmospheric aerosol (also so-called atmospheric particles) is a complex mixture of substances in solid and/ or liquid state with a size ranging from a few nanometers (1 nanometer = 10-9 meters) to tens of microns (1 micron = 10-6 meters = 1000 nanometers). These particles are a complex mixture of natural matter, such as mineral dust or sea salt, with anthropogenic substances, such as the soot, sulphate, nitrate, ammonium and a number of trace metals.
Aerosols affect our life in different ways. In urban areas, exposure of particles emitted in combustion processes affect human health and result in a number of hospitalizations due to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Aerosols also affect on climate due to they scatter and absorb radiation and influence on the size of cloud droplets and on the hydrological cycle.
The Izaña Atmospheric Research Center (AEMET), the University of Huelva and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientifcas (CSIC, Research Council of Spain) co-manage two aerosols Observatories: the Izaña Observatory and the Santa Cruz Observatory.
