New Seminar: Atmospheric moisture pathways and water vapour isotopologues

On 18 December 2017 at 13:00, Dr. Matthias Schneider (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany) imparted the seminar entitled “Atmospheric moisture pathways and water vapour isotopologues” at the Izaña Atmospheric Research Center’s Offices in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This talk was focused on showing how remote sensing observations of tropospheric water vapour isotopologue composition can give novel opportunities for understanding the different water cycle processes and their link to the climate. This was done by presenting the main achievements of the European Research Council project MUSICA (MUlti-platform remote Sensing of Isotopologues for investigating the Cycle of Atmospheric water) and the main goals of the current project MOTIV (MOisture Transport pathways and Isotopologues in water Vapour).

MUSICA demonstrated during 2011-2016 that the {H2O,δD} pair distribution obtained from ground-based NDACC/FTIR spectrometers and space-based MetOp/IASI sensors can identify distinct lower/middle tropospheric moisture pathways. This project also documented the possibilities of the NDACC/FTIR instruments for climatological studies (due to long-term monitoring) and of the MetOp/IASI sensors for observing diurnal signals on quasi global scale and with high horizontal resolution. MOTIV will continue this research line during 2017-2021 by (1) investigating the potential of the global MUSICA remote sensing data for moisture pathway research and (2) evaluating the representation of moist processes in weather and climate models. For this purpose, MOTIV will combine the global MUSICA isotopologue measurement with atmospheric isotopologue models.
