The HARMONIA COST Action has successfully concluded its atmospheric science training school, “Above the Clouds,” at the Izaña Atmospheric Research Center in Tenerife, Spain. Taking place from May 26 to 28, this event welcomed a diverse group of students and early-career researchers from various countries, offering them a unique opportunity to enhance their knowledge and hands-on skills in atmospheric studies.
Over three intensive days, participants engaged in practical sessions covering aerosol instrumentation and atmospheric measurement techniques, both in situ and through remote sensing. Field studies included the use of low-cost sun-photometers, allowing attendees to directly apply their learning in real-world conditions. The training also featured insightful lectures from leading experts in atmospheric composition, providing deeper scientific understanding of air quality and environmental monitoring
The high-altitude location of the Izaña Atmospheric Observatory provided an ideal setting for immersive training, allowing participants to familiarize themselves with advanced measurement methods while experiencing unique atmospheric conditions. Beyond technical learning, the training school fostered collaboration among researchers, creating valuable opportunities for networking and future scientific partnerships.
Participants praised the event for its engaging format, combining theoretical discussions with hands-on experience. Organizers expressed their gratitude to all speakers, instructors, and attendees for their contributions to making this initiative a success. With its positive impact on scientific training and international cooperation, “Above the Clouds” has reinforced its role in preparing the next generation of atmospheric science professionals.
