The Choir of the University Carlos III at Izaña

The July 2 was a special day. Science and culture exchanged experiences at the Izaña Observatory. We were honoured to receive the Choir of the University Carlos III that was on tour in Tenerife and had acted in the Auditorium of Tenerife the day before.

This unique event would not have been possible without the initiative of Paco Martin Leon, a renowned meteorologist, AEMET partner recently (and sadly) retired, and enthusiastic about many subjects. Of Paco’s hobbies on July 2 he was able to enjoy some of them like sharing “high altitude meteorology” and “singing in height”, along with his wife and friends.

We appreciate the enormous interest shown by the members of the Carlos III University Choir for what we do at the Izaña Observatory. We were surprised by the high level of knowledge about meteorology they had, we do not know if due to Paco’s influence.

Before leaving, the choir gave us a tremendous and gratifying surprise was singing in front of the Observatory a piece of his repertoire. Despite the wind, and the added difficulties due to lack of air aloft, the chorus sounded heavenly and did put the willies to which we were privileged to hear. It was probably the only choir has performed at the Observatory Izaña in its 103 years of life. A milestone in our history!

We want to share with all of you the video that we took of the historical performance, and with it wish you a happy summer full of science and culture!
