The World Environment Day 2009.  The Izaña Observatory:  25 years in the Global Atmospheric Watch Program (June 5th, 2009)

In June 2009 the Izaña Observatory turns 25 years in the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) Programme. This important commemoration has been celebrated on June 5th, the World Environment Day, at the Izaña Observatory with the presence of Ms Teresa Ribera, the Secretary of State of Climate Change (Ministry on Environment, and Rural and Marine Environments), the Directive Body of the Meteorological State Agency of Spain (AEMET) , headed by its President, Francisco Cadarso, and other authorities. Dr. Geir Braathen (WMO Atmospheric Research and Environment Programme) gave the invited conference dealing with the main atmospheric issues and concerns, the GAW programme, and the role played by the Izaña Observatory  within GAW and other associated programmes. The World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.
