On June 9 and 10, the VI CEPSA PASCAL Conference was held at the Hotel Botanico in Puerto de la Cruz. CEPSA is an industrial group whose main activity is oil refining and the commercialization of oil derivatives, and PASCAL is the company’s Department for the Environment, Safety and Quality. The department has recently started to work on a variety of activities related to Greenhouse Gases. This series of talks has brought together PASCAL representatives from all the CEPSA refineries and experts in the environment, air quality, climate change, biodiversity, safety, accidental marine pollution and innovation. Izaña Atmospheric Research Center (CIAI) was invited to take part in the talks with the presentation entitles ‘R+D Activities in air quality and Climate Change at the Izaña Atmospheric Research Center’. The presentation describes the most important aspects of the two main atmospheric environmental problems we currently face: climate change and air pollution at a world level within the context of the World Meteorology Organization’s Global Atmospheric Watch Program. The presentation also talked about the R+D and technological development programs carried out at Izaña Atmospheric Research Center on the observation of greenhouse gases and atmospheric aerosols, which play an important role in the climate change process. Finally, the research activities of CIAI were describe, as were some recent results relative to air quality, both at a local level in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and in a much wider context including North Africa.
