National warning system of African air mass intrusions (CSIC-Environment Ministry)
In the frame of two agreements between the Ministry on Environment, and Rural and Marine Environments (MERME, SDG de Calidad del Aire y Medio Ambiente Industrial) and the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA) of the National Research Council (CSIC) for the study and assessment of atmospheric pollution by particulate matter in Spain, an early warning system of African air mass intrusions has been implemented. This system is based on email message submission to the persons in charge of the quality networks/systems of the Autonomous Governments of Spain. The alert system, which is officially disseminated throughout the Spanish air quality monitoring departments by the through the MERME, may be also obtained from web www.calima.ws. The IDAEA-Izaña teams perform also the validation and assessment of dust-loaded African air masses that could impact the background PM levels in Spain.
The Izaña Atmospheric Research Center, as Associated Unit to the CSIC through the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research, (former Earth Science Institute), is part of the national African air mass intrusions early warning system.
