Santa Cruz de Tenerife, July 2025 — The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has officially invited EUBREWNET to join its prestigious Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) programme as a Contributing Network, recognizing its key role in the observation and protection of the ozone layer.

EUBREWNET (European Brewer Network https://eubrewnet.aemet.es/eubrewnet) is a collaborative network of Brewer spectrophotometers that collects, processes, and distributes data on total ozone, ultraviolet radiation, and aerosol optical depth. Initially established as a European network under the COST 1207 action, it has since evolved into a global network with stations on every continent. The network is managed by the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and provides near-real-time data with quality control, supporting both scientific research and satellite validation.
This collaboration strengthens EUBREWNET’s commitment to high-quality atmospheric monitoring, particularly in the measurement of Total Column Ozone, UV radiation, and Aerosol Optical Depth, through this international network of Brewer spectrophotometers.
What Does This Collaboration Involve?
As a GAW Contributing Network, EUBREWNET will take on new responsibilities, including:
- Providing near-real-time data for satellite validation and global monitoring.
- Actively participating in WMO intercomparison campaigns and scientific projects.
- Enhancing quality control and traceability of observations.
- Facilitating data exchange with the World Ozone and UV Data Centre (WOUDC).
- Keeping station metadata up to date in the GAWSIS repository.
In addition, EUBREWNET stations will be recognized as GAW Contributing Stations, with the potential to achieve Regional or Global status depending on their relevance and coverage.
A Step Forward in International Cooperation
This integration marks a milestone in EUBREWNET’s history and a recognition of the collective efforts of its operators, calibration centers, and scientific collaborators. The network will continue to provide technical support, training, and collaborative tools to ensure excellence in atmospheric observation.
AEMET expresses its gratitude to the WMO for this opportunity and reaffirms its commitment to open science, international cooperation, and environmental protection.
