Teide’s hat movie
Teide’s hat movie
The rotating web camera located on the top of the Izana Atmospheric Observatory’s tower is used for scientific purposes. However we have obtained beautiful movies. This quick picture animation shows the evolution of a hat-shaped lenticular cloud on peak of Teide on June 21. This cloud, according to the local popular wisdom, is rain omen. Lenticular clouds are stationary lens-shaped clouds that form at high altitudes, normally aligned perpendicular to the wind direction. Apparently the “hat” is a quite cloud over the Teide. However the animation reveals a very active and continuous flow. This cloud is produced by the interaction of the pronounced orography of the Teide volcano with an intense southwest atmospheric circulation at mean levels. Sometimes, and that was not the case, it is precursory of an active atmospheric disturbance.
