Izaña at the educational congress on climate change
The Ministry for Education, Universities, Culture and Sport of the Canary Government, through the ‘Dirección General de Ordenación e Innovación Educativa’, held the “Congreso educativo sobre cambio climatico. Una respuesta interdisciplinar desde la escuela”. (Educational congress on climate change. An interdisciplinary response from a school age), on May 6 and 7 at the Palacio de Congresos de Canarias (the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium) in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. One of the commitments assumed at the United Nations Framework Convention on climate Change (UNFCCC) is to ‘promote and support with its cooperation the education, training and raising of public awareness of climate change and to encourage widespread participation in the process.’ Izaña Atmospheric Research Center (CIAI) was asked to form a part on the speakers panel 1: “Evidence of climate change (evolution and theories on the change)”, and on the subsequent round table. It was an excellent chance to show Canary education institutions the activities carried out by the CIAI in the monitoring and research on greenhouse gases and atmospheric aerosols and to explain the roles these components play in the climate change process we are immersed in. The congress was attended by over 150 teachers, and was watched by many people on-line through the congress web site (http://www.congresocambioclimatico.com). The CIAI presentation can be downloaded here.
