I MeteoHierro Conference 2010

The 1st MeteoHierro Conference 2010 was held at the Parador Nacional de El Hierro on April 17 and 18. The conference, organized by the El Hierro Island Government and the Canary Government, aimed to serve as a meeting point for meteorologists, civil protection staff, weather reporters and other specialists in the field, both professional and amateur, to analyze and evaluate the current situation in meteorological sciences in the light of adverse weather phenomena in the world and, in particular, in the Canary Islands. At the conference, Emilio Cuevas gave a talk entitled “AEMET R&D Activities in the Canaries: a contribution to the improvement of knowledge on adverse meteorological situations”. The talk outlined the R&D work on adverse meteorological and environmental conditions that might affect the Canary population developed by AEMET at the Izaña Atmospheric Research Center. Subsequently, results were presented from research on extreme episodes in the Canaries, as were development tools in current use. Furthermore, the climatology of adverse meteorological situations on El Hierro were presented and discussed, highlighting the difficulties in separating signs of climate change from natural climatic variability. Finally, other elements were laid out for consideration and meteorological dangers and risks for the Canary Islands were discussed.
