Sand and Dust Storm ESA/WMO Expert Consultation Meeting

A user consultation meeting to prepare for a potential Sand and Dust Storm monitoring project under the European Space Agency (ESA) umbrella, was held at the “Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya” (UPC) (Spain) on 8 and 9 September 2009. Around 30 participants from ESA member states, China, Korea, and the United States attended. Users, dust storm modelers and dust algorithm experts representing meteorological services, air quality and the health communities, space agencies, as well as the World Meteorological Organization WMO (co-organizer) and the ECMWF participated. User requirements for near-real time satellite data to support Sand and Dust Storm were drafted and are currently under review by the broader end-user community.
